Louisville company fits 2012 Paralympic hopeful with first intelligent prosthetic leg approved for civilian population

Louisville, KY – December 2, 2011 – Kentucky Prosthetics & Orthotics, Inc. recently fit Paralympic hopeful Oksana Masters with the Genium Bionic Prosthetic System, the first intelligent prosthetic system ever created and the result of a five year collaboration between the U.S. Military and prosthetic manufacturer Otto Bock HealthCare.

The Genium was just recently made available to the civilian population and Oksana Masters is the first in the Louisville area to receive this innovative technology.

Setting the Genium apart is its microprocessor controlled prosthetic knee joint that utilizes the same technologies as found in Wii gaming systems and smart phones to offer a gait closer to natural human motion and which greatly reduces the difference between the body's natural abilities and artificial replacements. The result is expanded physical movement such as walking backward, climbing stairs, etc.

About Oksana Masters

Twenty–two year–old Oksana Masters was born in Khmelnitskyy, Ukraine with multiple birth defects as a result of radiation poisoning from the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Abandoned after birth and placed in an orphanage, she was adopted by a single mother who brought her to the United States, where she has undergone numerous surgeries as a result of the birth defects and radiation poisoning.

She is a bilateral above the knee amputee and can walk freely without assistive devices thanks to the new Genium knees.

Oksana currently trains with the adaptive rowing program through the Louisville Rowing Club. She and her partner are training to compete for a spot on the United States 2012 Paralympics Team in the mixed doubles sculling competition.
